volcanoRedoubt Volcano has been erupting lately. When Redoubt erupted in 1989, a KLM flight lost all four engines after flying into the ash cloud. The jet dropped 14,000 feet before the crew could restart the engines. They landed safely in Anchorage, but the FAA has kept a closer eye on ash clouds since.
two volcanos Alaska is part of the Pacific Rim of Fire, so we have our share of active volcanoes. From our cabin on the Kenai Peninsula, we see Mt. Redoubt (right), Mt. Iliamna (left), and Mt. St. Augustine (an island) to the south (not shown).Ninilchik
I took this shot of Ninilchik village in my side mirror a couple of years ago. Redoubt looms above the clouds like a ghost.

The volcanos stand about 9,000 to 10,000 feet high amidst mountains half that height, so even in summer they are snowcapped. -- Carmen

Life in Alaska

Over the weekend of March 20th, my boyfriend and I hit the pavement for a road trip to Fairbanks. It was a clear, blue-sky day, the roads were dry, and Denali was out basking in the sun. Along the way we saw the Nenana Ice Classic tripod, which is used in the Alaskan tradition of guessing when the Tanana river will break apart in the spring. A little ways outside of Fairbanks you can get your picture taken with the Trans Alaska Pipeline.

We also got to soak up some minerals at the Chena Hot Springs outdoor rock lake, an hour drive out of Fairbanks. It was fun to have your hair frosting over while your body was roasting hot, and with bright stars overhead making it all the more magical. Chena Hot Springs Resort utilizes geothermal power and horticulture in hopes to become a self sustaining community.

My favorite part of the weekend was visiting the World Ice Art Championships. (See the DVD to the left.) We went during the day and then again at night, and it was wonderful noticing different aspects of all the pieces when they were brightly lit up. There are single and multi-block sculptures as well as a few kids parks, a maze, and giant ice slides. The pieces are scattered throughout a campground amidst a background of spruce trees. --Kyla
