My son, an auditor for KPMG, was in Point Barrow recently on business. Since Barrow is well above the Arctic Circle and it was almost winter solstice, I asked him to take pictures. He emailed back: "I'm taking pictures, but you know what? It turns out that Barrow is very dark this time of year. Don't know if anything will turn out." He held up his iPhone to prove it was really 11:08 am. The sun doesn't come up this close to solstice, but the southern sky lightens. Looking north toward his lunch destination at one of Barrow's 2 restaurants, the sky is still dark. He tried the other restaurant for lunch another day, and took this shot showing the Arctic Ocean off to the right.
