Life in Alaska

The mushers make their way down 4th Ave. in downtown Anchorage to the cheers of the crowd that lines the route for miles through the city.

It's dog mushing time in Alaska. Anchorage is the home of the World Championship Sled Dog Race held each year in February during our winter celebration called Fur Rendezvous. The best elapsed time in three heats over three days, 25 miles each day, wins. The top sprint mushers and teams from around the world compete in this fast paced race. Anchorage is also the home of the ceremonial start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on the first Saturday of March each year. This grueling long-distance race takes mushers through over 1,000 miles of wilderness, winter storms, moose attacks and other challenges between Anchorage and Nome. The teams compete not only against each other but against the elements to survive this ultimate test of strength and endurance.

We have a great selection of dogsledding merchandise.

The next morning the "real" race begins with a restart on a frozen lake in Willow, Alaska about 50 miles north of Anchorage.
Share the inspiring story of Susan Butcher and her lead dog Granite with a special child in your life. It is the story of a shy, scraggly pup who became a strong and courageous leader. This beautifully written book was co-authored by Susan Butcher and her husband David Monson and illustrated by Sarah Douglas.
