The first few weeks of January we had below zero temperatures across the state. On January 14th, the Chinook winds came and on the 16th we set a record high in Anchorage: 50 degrees (the same as Atlanta, Georgia for the day).

Schools were closed for two days because the roads turned into ice rinks and some homes were flooded from all the snow melt. In fact, Fairbanks went from negative 44 to 44 above in just three days.

After all this warm weather, it is nice to have the temprature back to below freezing again. However, the ice skaters can't complain because the slick ice makes for great ice skating. (Pictures of Westchester Lagoon)

Life in Alaska

With the long, dark winters Alaskans face comes the challenge of entertaining ourselves, both inside and out. Hockey is a winter pastime played by many on the frozen lakes and outdoor hockey rinks, but for warmer fun, we shuffle into the Sullivan Arena to watch our local team: the Alaska Aces. The Aces are Alaska’s ECHL hockey team and they gave us something to cheer about last weekend. The Aces ended the Victoria Salmon Kings’ 13 game winning streak by winning all three games January 14-17.
The game I attended was Friday the 16th, the second game in the series. There were quite a few fights and the Aces scored 4 goals in the second period. The Aces fans have a tradition of throwing frozen salmon heads on the ice when the Aces score, so there are always garbage bags on hand. The Aces mascot is Boomer the polar bear and I was able to get a photo op with him when he wasn’t on the ice entertaining the crowd. GO ACES! - Kyla

Pausing from a delightful skate on the Town Square Park ice rink, these two are cozy and comfortable in our Alaska Aces gear.
