Did you know…
In 1925, part of the Iditarod Trail became a life saving highway when a diptheria epidemic threatened to break out in Nome. Serum was rushed from Anchorage to Nenana by train, then a relay of 20 mushers and their faithful dog teams carried it almost 700 miles in about six days, braving high winds and 40° below zero temperatures. The effort saved hundreds of lives and received world-wide press coverage.

Life in Alaska

Lance Mackey makes history again with back to back Yukon Quest/Iditarod wins in 2007 and 2008.

At 2:46 am on March 12th, Lance Mackey was the first Iditarod musher to cross under the burled arch on Front Street in Nome. Jeff King followed just 1 hour and 19 minutes later at 4:05 am. Mackey had tricked King into thinking he was settling down for nap in Elim, but once King fell asleep, Mackey quietly snuck back out on the trail. Read more...

Ramey Smyth, Ken Anderson and Martin Buser arrived over 5 hours after the leaders. Dee Dee Jonrowe took 15th place this year. Rookie Deborah Bicknell was the 2008 recipient of the Red Lantern Award (the last musher to complete the race) at 8:36 pm on March 17th. Congratulations to all mushers who participated in the 2008 Iditarod!
