Life in Alaska

Hatcher Pass

Hatcher Pass, nestled between mountain peaks in the Talkeetna Range just north of Anchorage, is now considered one of the best backcountry boarding areas in the world. In over 3,000 acres of varied terrain at elevations up to 4,600 feet it’s easy to find untracked snow. Deep snow. Major snow.

Many boarders ride to the top of the pass in pickup trucks. A designated driver finds them at the bottom, where they all jump in and head up the pass again.
Little Susitna River
The Little Susitna River flows from the Talkeetna mountains in the Hatcher Pass area. At the top of the road lies Independence Mine State Historical Park. (The Independence Mine was the largest gold producer in the Willow Creek Mining District.)

You can drive right to Independence Mine State Park in summer, but in November you need skis or snowshoes to get up close.
