Did you know…

The word Alaska comes from the Aleutian word "Alyeska," meaning "The Great Land." Populated by Indians, Eskimos, and Aleuts for centuries, Alaska was not explored by Europeans until 1741.
SummitWe went camping over Labor Day weekend -- son Jameson, nephew Vernon, and friends Brent and Lydia on motorcycles with husband Mark and daughter Hilary riding with me in the chase/gear vehicle towing my little trailer. We stopped in Broad Pass on the Parks Highway for lunch.
MotorcyclesAt Nenana, Hilary got her helmet and joined her brother on his bike. Between Nenana and Fairbanks, we had a nice view of the Alaska Range to the south. But it was late and cold by the time we got to Chena Hot Springs and we were all glad to thaw out in the beautiful outdoor pool. There was a heavy frost that night with ice skimming the puddles.
Tanana RiverThe next morning we started south on the Richardson Highway. We stopped to admire the view of the Alaska Range from along the Tanana River. It was a balmy 65 degrees -- I kicked off my shoes, knowing it would probably be the last time the sun kissed my toes until next summer. At Paxon Lake Campground that night it stayed above freezing.
caribouIn the morning, the cyclists stopped twice for caribou herds (and we made it home without any "close encounters of the moose kind").

Life in Alaska

Alaska Quarter

The Alaska state quarter release was launched with a ceremony on Friday August 29, 2008 at the Alaska State Fair in Palmer. In attendance were Senator Lisa Murkowski, Mat-Su Borough Mayor Curt Menard, and Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell among other dignitaries. Governor Sarah Palin was scheduled to attend but was instead in Ohio for the announcement of her selection as the Republican Vice-Presidential nominee.

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell had the honor of placing a replica of the newest quarter next to Alaska on the backdrop map of the United States. The ceremony included the singing of the Alaska Flag Song. This “flower flag” was located next to the stage. It was truly a day to celebrate our great State.

Giant cabbage
Alaska’s long summer days make for some really BIG veggies. The giant 69.9 lb cabbage steals the show but this 907 lb pumpkin is pretty impressive, too. Cabbage fairies add to the festivities at the Giant Cabbage Weigh Off. Our many hours of daylight produce spectacular dahlias in all shapes, sizes and colors. -- Leanne
