Description

Collected on the shores of Alaska. Each float is unique. Some are clear, some are cloudy, some have imprints of their netting. Fishermen started using glass floats in the 1840s to keep their fishing nets afloat. The hollow glass balls were buoyant enough to keep fishnets as long as 50 miles floating near the surface of the ocean. The Japanese began using glass fishing floats extensively in 1910 and most of the remaining floats originated in Japan. Although glass floats are no longer used by fishermen, many of them are still afloat in the Pacific Ocean. Authentic floats are generally a shade of green or blue, often with bubbles and impurities embedded in the glass.
